There is a difference.

Rather than name other products specifically (which is a little tacky and you can see them yourself in stores or on the internet) we'll talk about general differences

Obviously we want you to buy CD Doctor but there are more reasons than that why you should. The following are specifics that need be a part of your decision process. After all, if we don't toot our horn how will you know?

Product concept. There are 2 approaches to CD repair other products provide.

1. To use a rubbing compound for scratch removal. The main drawback with this method is time. It is not easy to remove much other than "hairline" scratches. It takes a lot of rubbing to remove deep scratches .... more than most people are willing to do. You will notice that most of these products state " for the removal of minor scratches".

2. To fill a scratch with some form of clear material. This method can present a few problems. If a scratch has rough edges the sections causing "deflection" of a laser may not be repaired. If the wrong fillers are used they can flake and cause lens damage.

With both of these methods the treatment is "damage area specific". The exact scratch must be found to accomplish a repair. This is important to realize because not every scratch will be the culprit, causing skips, and often there are multiple scratches. At times a small hairline scratch is the problem and not a larger deep one. This is because the hairline may be more abrasive or angular causing deflection while the large one has smooth edges and is still clear enough for the laser to pass through and read.

In a sense, CD Doctor does both. Our GP (General Practice) Repair has abrasives and polymers. The combination incorporates special optical aggregates to reduce a scratch and polymers that bond and coat in a way that treats scratches so a laser passes "through" them. The advantages to this approach are:

. A scratch does not need to be removed completely. It only needs slight "reduction".

. Often there doesn't need to be any reduction, especially with hairline. Simply wiping GP on and wiping it off stops problems.

. Because of our coating feature it is often not necessary to find a specific area of damage. If it is it's easier.

. Scratches are not filled they are coated. There is no real depth to the coating thus no potential for flaking.

. Our polymers are designed to bond to the CD surface. They cannot flake and the repair is permanent.

Some scratch repairs are tough. They might be very deep or have sharp edges. For these problems we have Acute that is a rubbing compound specifically designed for polycarbonate surfaces. You'll notice we offer it "with" GP in a Trauma Kit. With this combination even the worst cut can be repaired. Acute does a little reduction and GP finishes the job. The operative word is reduction not removal which is a big difference when it comes to how long it takes or how much effort is needed to make a repair.

Some of the products state " for minor repairs". We state "CD Doctor is not a wimpy product" and give our 100% guarantee. Since 1997 (when we started selling CD Doctor) to now we have only had 4 returns out of thousands of kits sold.

Testing. We have done massive testing. CD Doctor is basically a technical application product and we needed to make sure it worked and was applicable to all types of media; Music, ROM or Video. This wasn't just a matter of putting some stuff on a CD and calling it good. It involved every facet of testing from aggregate blends, polymers and suspensions through MSDS statements and media play equipment.

We have performed a wide variety of damage tests. There is one product that says they tested by causing damage to a CD with steel wool. The gauge wasn't stated and we all know there are steel wool's with a fineness useful for polishing. Yes, we tested steel wool .... an SOS pad. But more .... we inflicted damage with Farber Ware serrated edge kitchen knives. We had a CD brought to us that was pulled out of a player with a pair of pliers. Not only did it have deep scratches but gauges and impressions. The Trauma Kit fixed it with about 7 minutes of effort.

Testing and development went far beyond what we did. We utilized the expertise of industry leaders such as GE and US Chemical in the search for exacting polymer combinations.

Content. Most of the other products give 1 ounce or maybe 2 ounces of repair product. Then they make statements like up to 40 or 50 applications. This is something we need to look at. What most are referring to is scratches only. It's not great accomplishment to repair 40 scratches. One CD may have 10. CD Doctor gives a lot for the price .... around double the content .... and our 40 "or more" repairs is CD's.

A Coordinated product line. Some of the competition is simply an extension of another product line such as CD cases, shelving, or office products. Many only have a cleaner or repair product. CD Doctor is a complete CD specialty care system. It was developed from a specific need and has been expanded accordingly to include repair, cleaning and protection. Technical Concepts Corp. is a technical product development company. We offer products that have long development, analysis, testing and specific application.

We might also add that to our knowledge Protect is the only product of it's kind and our cleaner is much more than a cleaner because it also renews a CD surface. That is one of the results of specializing .... you get applications you need.
